Eilen Jewell, americana nacida en Idaho , factura desde hace cuatro preciosos discos de desamor campestre.
Su delicadeza al cantar puede recordarnos a Peggy Lee, y el estilo country folk de sus baladas hace que sonriamos pensando en Patsy Cline. 'Boundary county', su primer disco, estaba lleno de medios tiempos tristones para escuchar a la luz de la luna en el campo. Con algún arreglo folk que recordaba al primer Dylan, las 13 canciones de su disco debut hacía pensar en un tributo musical a las crooners vaqueras y recordaba bastante al 'Shadowland' de Kd Lang.
En 'Letters from sinners and strangers', su segundo disco editado en 2007, Eilen se desmelenaba un poco más y, aunque seguía con la cadencia campestre y llegaba a versionear el 'Walkin’ down the line' de Dylan, ya se podía adivinar un espectro de estilos más amplios al aumentar el volumen de revoluciones en los temas y rockerizarlos un poco. Siempre acompañada de su fiel contrabajo y la batería básica con escobillas (¿hay algo más bonito que unas escobillas arañando una caja de batería?), en este disco Eilen ya tocaba palos más cercanos al rockabilly clásico.
'Letters from sinners and strangers' le trajo el reconocimiento en su país. El disco entró en los diez primeros puestos de las listas de radio y obtuvo varias nominaciones en las habituales listas de "lo mejor del año" en diferentes publicaciones. La gira de presentación le llevó por todo Estados Unidos llegando a compartir escenario con clásicos de la escena como Loretta Lynn o los Hacienda Brothers.
Se ha preocupado de escuchar a los maestros. Desde Woody Guthrie hasta Elvis y Buddy Holly pasando por los Animals o los Kinks, tal y como ella reconoce. Esta mezcla de estilos ha hecho que su música crezca en arreglos para su nuevo disco, 'Sea of tears'.
Eilen Jewell sigue siendo la chica dulce y tierna que canta historias para bailar bien juntos y agarrados, pero que también sabe meter un buen guitarrazo cuando hace falta. 'Sea of tears' es un disco mucho más eléctrico, pero igual de emocionante. 'Rain roll in', el tema que lo inaugura, es un medio tiempo que bien podría figurar en los repertorios de Roy Orbison o Chris Isaak y 'Nowhere in no time' es country de toda la vida de sombrero Stetson y fiesta en el granero con vestido de domingo y ponche gratis para todos por cortesía de la parroquia.
