Tras haber conseguido cruzar exitosamente las montañas, Thorin y su compañía deben pedir ayuda a un poderoso extraño antes de adentrarse en el Bosque Mirkwood, que está cargado de sorpresas y peligros. Además, su mago no irá con ellos, por lo que deben de ser doblemente precavidos. Bilbo Bolson, por su parte, sigue en deuda con los enanos, y este contrato solo terminará si consiguen llegar al asentamiento humano de Ciudad del Lago. No obstante, la misión del grupo es lo más importante para todos: deben ser capaces de completar su viaje a la Montaña Solitaria, donde Baggins debe buscar la puerta que le de acceso al tesoro del dragón Smaug.
Segunda parte del tríptico que adapta la obra de J.R.R. Tolkien (tras "El hobbit: Un viaje inesperado"). El director Peter Jackson vuelve a ponerse tras las cámaras en esta historia épica y fantástica en la que bulle la mitología legendaria y el espíritu aventurero. Continúan en el reparto con respecto a la anterior parte de la saga: Martin Freeman (Bilbo), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) y Andy Serkins (Gollum), y se incorporan Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Benedict Cumberbatch y Stephen Fry.
