Manhattan, siglo XIX. Peter Lake es un joven neoyorkino que se gana la vida de manera no muy honrada. Su próximo cometido es robar en una gran mansión que cree vacía. Sin embargo, en ella habita una bella joven, Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay, 'Downton Abbey'), que pronto despierta la pasión del protagonista. Ambos se enamoran pero Beverly está muy enferma y morirá. El mundo de fantasía que construyen hará que la joven no desaparezca del todo de su vida, pero la desolación de Peter le llevarán a acometer misiones fantásticas en las que contará con la ayuda de un caballo blanco.
